Application Notes
Using Child Immersion Alarm with Pools And Spas
When using with a pool or hot tub, a child is best protected with the Turtle locked on the wrist, not attached to another part of his/her anatomy or clothing:
- child cannot remove the Turtle sensor
- alarm can occur when child reaches into pool, before falling in
- hand tends to remain near surface after child falls in, providing stronger signal to Base Station

Salt Chlorinated Pools
An increase in salt concentration increases water’s conductivity, making propagation of a radio wave more difficult. This has the effect of reducing “depth coverage”, the depth below which a Base Station cannot decipher the signal transmitted by an immersed Turtle.
The salt concentration of chloride salt pools and spas is typically 2,400 to 3,600 ppm, but this varies in practice. The concentration of bromide salt pools and spas is about half this. The salt concentration of non-salt chlorinated pools and spas, including pools using ozonators, varies from 50 parts per million [ppm] to several hundred ppm.
| For succesful set up with a chloride salt pool, the Base Station may have to be less than 50 ft. [15 m.] from the pool. Above a 4,000 ppm salt concentration, the Base Station may have to be pool side. Consider a Commercial / Extended Range System that alarms at both the pool and in the residence. |

For more information, refer to Safety Turtle and Salt Water.
- if you regularly chlorinate your pool, you do not have a salt chlorinator
- if your filter has an ozone generator, you do not have a salt chlorinator
- If you or your pool contractor add bags of salt when refilling your pool, you do have a salt chlorinator
- if unsure if you have a salt chlorinator, consult your pool contractor
Using Immersion Alarm for your Neighbor's Pool or Spa
Unlike other pool alarms, Safety Turtle can alert if your child falls in an immediate neighbor's pool, spa or pond.
- Base Station should be within within 150 ft. (45 m.) of the farthest point of your neighbor's pool*
- or within 50 ft. (15 m.) if it is salt chlorinated*
- If Base Station is in a ground or second floor window, it cannot cover both your and your neighbor's pool - situate it near the lot line above any fence material*
- Base Station must be in Travel Bag for permanent outside installation
- For alarming both poolside and in the residence, you require Commercial/Extended Range System
* Turtle must be immersed in the neighbor's pool to confirm coverage from your property
